1915年生，日本工業設計代表人物之一。柳宗理畢業於日本藝術學院(為現今東京國立藝術音樂大學)於西元1950年成立了Yanagi(柳)設計機構，1957年其蝴蝶椅產品贏得義大利米蘭金獎。
柳宗理認為雙手更能傳遞出產品的溫度與想法，用手去感受，手上便會有答案。每件器皿都經過精密的計算並親手調整，設計造型前都應當先考慮需求與機能。
若論當代日本最受景仰也最具代表性的設計巨匠，當非柳宗理莫屬，柳宗理的不鏽鋼家庭用品系列更是獲得日本工業設計界最高榮譽的good design賞，可稱得上是全球最受人景仰的設計大師之一。
