Hiba grows slowly over a period of 200 - 300 years and is considered a precious material.  A first-choice building material for shrines because it naturally resists thanks to an abundance of Hinokitiol found in Aomori-grown hiba trees. *Hiba arborvitae is a special member of the cypress family,  native to Aomori Japan.  EASY USE & LONG LIFE: Before using, wet the board first and wipe before using to prevent stains and odors.  After using, wash with soap and warm water then stand on its side to dry.  Dry the board away from sunlight to prevent warping.  Not for use in dishwashers which will damage the boards. No need to oil Aomori Hiba wood as the Hinokitoil protects the wood naturally. The natural aroma tells your Hinokitioil is present.
